KNOTTY HEARTS

The heart interwoven with the inverted heart is an ancient Celtic symbol. It represents something in the 60’s we would refer to as soul mates, two people who have opened up to each other, trusting the mate with their deepest thoughts and emotions. There is a fragility and a vulnerability in the relationship. I discovered that it is difficult to craft these knots with neon because when the glass tubes are being bent they double back on themselves and to describe it very poorly, they need to go up and down at the same time. Perhaps that mimics the challenge of having a soul mate. I wanted to use the rough and weathered background so that it was clear that in life, loving is a bumpy process, not smooth and easy. Also the wood came from the ceiling over our front porch and though it needed replacement, I had an attachment to it dating back over three decades.
